Description :
The effect of synthetic pyrethroid, Cypermethrin on the haematological parameters of Clarias gariepinus was assessed
with three exposures of sub-lethal concentrations and control. The fishes were exposed to 0.2μl/L, 0.3μl/L and 0.4μl/L
cypermethrin concentrations for 96h. Red blood cell (RBC) count, White blood cell (WBC) count, Haemoglobin (Hb)
content, Packed cell volume (PCV) showed significant (P ≤ 0.05) increase. Mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) values
at 0.3μl/L and 0.4μl/L cypermethrin concentrations were not significantly different. Mean corpuscular haemoglobin
count (MCHC) and Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) also exhibited significantly different values with that of control.
Alterations in the haematological parameters led to the conclusion that cypermethrin has toxic effects on Clarias
gariepinus.
