ABSTRACT:
Effects of Gossypol on body weight and gono-somatic indices in Indian male palm squirrel was studied. Gossypol a “China Pill” is phenolic compound isolated from seed of cotton plant (Gossypium species). The discovery of this compound by Chinese scientist as male fertility regulating agent, whose action is reversible. Antifertility action of Gossypol depends on purity of the compound, dose and duration of treatment. There are also differences as opinion on toxic effects of Gossypol. Therefore, safety and importance of Gossypol as male contraceptive drug for human beings is still debatable. Further investigations on toxicology are required to determine the side effects of this drug on sex accessory glands before the pills are to be widely used. The experiment was conducted during April and May when the male squirrels were sexually active. Experimental male animals received Gossypol in two dose, 20 mg/kg B.W./ day and 30 mg/kg B.W./ day for 7 and 5 weeks respectively. After Gossypol treatment in both the groups, body weight of all experimental animals were significantly reduced as compared to those of control. The weight of testis and accessory sex glands (epididymis, prostate and seminal vesicle) did not show significant variations after 20 mg. treatment, whereas at 30 mg treatment the weights of these sex accessory glands reduced significantly. It is due to toxic effects of the compound.
