Description :
Aniline has been copolymerized in the presence of substituted aniline as comonomer to prepared conducting copolymer of poly(aniline-co-m-methylaniline) type via. the chemical oxidation polymerization route. The molar feed ratio of monomers is varied to prepared copolymers of different composition. Optimization of the physicochemical properties such as solubility, UV-visible absorption, FTIR spectra, thermal stability, electrical conductivity and transport properties was achieved by varying the composition of monomeric substituents in these copolymers. The physicochemical trends demonstrated the proper proportion of methyl(-CH3) group in the polymer chain are essential to achieve desired optional physicochemical properties. Therefore, copolymers are ideally appropriate for multifaceted applications and would promote wider usage of conjugated polymers in various fields of organic-based optoelectronic as well as energy storage devices in the near future. The conductivity of copolymer is slightly less than pure polyaniline but processability has been improved significantly. Conduction mechanism has been found to be 3D-VRH in case of pure HCl-doped polyaniline and 1D-VRH for copolymer. The temperature dependence of dielectric constant and conductivity suggests that copolymer is 1D-disordered state composed of 3D-metallic crystalline region and 1D-localized amorphous region
